A Peek Into Personal Leadership

I've been incredibly privileged to be apart of Hillsong College and I've been learning so much it's crazy. Today (literally 30 minutes ago) I had my Personal Leadership class. It's usually taught by one of our amazing teachers, Tom Bachtle, but today our college principle, Lee Burns, talked on Values and Mission. The nuggets and knowledge we got from that class was incredible that I just felt like sharing my notes with you. If you're involved in church ministry, leadership or maybe you're a leader of a team in your school, this information is so good. If you're reading this and aren't any of those things then apply these into your personal life or family. I know I will be.

Warning: Some of the notes in here are notes that would apply to me personally. So when reading, throw in your own values and core beliefs to make it relate to your life. It will help, trust me!

“Leadership is in the eyes of the other people; it is they who proclaim you as a leader"
– Carrie Gilstrap

Never take for granted the opportunities that we have. The reason that God has us on platforms is so that the Devil can get a better shot. We can’t hide in public.

Personal Leadership:
When you see people dragging people down in ministry, it tells you more of how they feel about themselves.
We’re quick to judge and compare our home churches to Hillsong or other massive and influential churches and see what our churches or pastors aren’t doing. All in all, God has them and that church there for a reason. A great reason! We want God to tell us “Good job good and faithful servant” when we arrive in heaven. Respect and submit to your leaders and pastors.

Gifts:
We all have gifts. What we do is compare our gifts against the other. We say “if I had this gift I’d be a big deal!”. We already are a big deal. We’re God’s children! When we think like this we’re being “worldly”. There is no gift that is more important than the other. They’re ALL being at service in the body of Christ.

Question: Is my gift being used for the body of Christ?
As soon as you compare yourself to someone else, you devalue yourself. You’re comparing your faults to someone else’s strengths.

Self Alignment
“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple?” – Paul in 1st Corinthians
If that’s who you believe you are then behave like it! There’s an action that follows believing. The actions that follow you say something about you. If you find yourself saying: “Negative church politics always follow me where ever I go!”That says something about you.

Core Values:
·      Core belief – the driving motivation of your life
·      Values – the priority you place on those core beliefs
·      Culture – the “environment” that you live in
How do you find your core beliefs? 1st Thessalonians 4:2
People can tell a lot about you by the way you live your life. Spend 10 minutes talking to someone and you’ll know a WHOLE LOT more about them.
If you don’t self align right now, it’s going to cost a lot more later on in life. Just like a car tire.
When your words don’t line up with your conviction, you need to self align.
If you don’t like the way something’s run, jump in, get involved and add your piece. Don’t gossip about it or separate and isolate it. Get involved.
It’s easy to pick the dirt out in someone. It’s harder to produce the gold.
People in ministry will notice if what you’re speaking doesn’t align with how you’re living.

In Marriage
In Ephesians: When a man is strong, a woman will be submissive. The woman of God that we are supposed to be is the husbands responsibility.

Homework: sit down with a piece of paper, write down what are your core beliefs (5 things that fuel you, 5 core beliefs for your family/marriage, 5 core beliefs for your ministry), values (what you’re going to do about your core beliefs) and culture (the way you'll go about it).
Look at your mission. Discover what God’s called you to.

Statements
Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.
A man that fails to plan is a man that plans to fail.

High quality question: How will I live today to create the tomorrow I’m committed to?
From age 1-20 life is extremely slow. Age 20-30, career speeds things up. Age 30-beyond, it flies by. Wasted days become wasted months. Wasted months become wasted years… know which road you're on.

We all need discipline. It will sustain you long term. Discipline is the ligaments that holds the body of Christ together.

Challenge: what do you need to let go of that God has been trying to get from you? What would be the worst thing that would happen to me if I gave it to God? What would be the best thing if I let go of it? We’re all going to have problems in life. At least make sure they’re new problems.

Personal reminder: Being a worship leader is a 100% submissive role. We are definitely called to build the church and give ourselves to the church. In the bible the only worship leader mention got kicked out of heaven… it was Lucifer and it was because he didn’t submit and thought he was better than God.
